A very striking example, with exceptionally brilliant and vibrant colours, of the ultimatedevelopment of Herbin's use of geometric form and very strong colour tone to create abstract 'space sculpture'. The interaction of the shapes and the densities of the colours sets off a sense of visual movement, both of plane, with some appearing to recede from the surface and some project, and laterally, as for example a brilliant yellow or red appears to move over an adjacent darker colour.

Herbin's art was rooted in his early study of Cubism, and of painters like Mondrian and Kandinsky, and he was also greatly affected by the colour theories of Sonia and Robert Delaunay. In the years after the War he moved into using a completely geometric treatment of form, and he became one of the leading and most influential painters of the abstract 'School of Paris'.

This screenprint was one of a group on which Herbin was working in the last few years of his life. Although completed it was not signed at the time of his death, and the studio stamp was used.
