A beautiful example of the lyrical use of colour and form which filled Braque's compositions on the bird motif in the last years of his life. This composition is drawn in freely-brushed strokes of aquatint, with accents of pure etching. The soft but emotive colours, pinks, blue and mauve, are set off by the varying densities of the aquatint tones in the bold silhouetted shapes of the birds and in the tone of the sky.

In many ways the form of the soaring bird became one of the most important motifs and symbols of Braque's art in the post-war years. The line of their flight defines space, and the rhythmic curve of the shapes of their wings expresses the movement within that limitless space. Braque saw their forms as a way of expressing his joy in the eternity of creation, his joy, like so many of his artist contemporaries, in the escape from war into peace.
