L?Éeuyère is one of Chagall?s most beautiful and important compositions inspired like Le Clown Fleuri by his passion for the theme of the circus. The rhythm of the line, the flowing elegant movement of the bareback rider, and the glowing excitement of colour inspired by the angled beams of the spotlights give it a sense of vitality and intense passion which is so much of the essence of Chagall?s mature post-war art.

It was during the mid-1960?s that Chagall drew some of the great masterworks of his oeuvre in the medium of lithography. He had drawn his earliest colour lithographs in the mid-1940?s whilst he was living in New York, but it was through his involvement with the Mourlot Studio in Paris, which really began after his return to France in 1947, that his understanding of the medium was really competed. Mourlot?s was the most creative lithography studio in the world and, inspired by the richness of stroke and colour which he began to develop there during the 1950?s, Chagall?s enthusiasm for the medium became even greater. By the early 1960?s his work in lithography was reaching tremendous new heights of inspiration, with line, tone and glowing colour in the richest of harmony.
