Sandby's finest prints from the mature part of his career were drawn in aquatint. The rarest of the prints are the ones that he issued himself as single prints, rather than as parts of published sets where he enlisted the help of printsellers like Boydell. This study of Canterbury is an absolutely outstanding example of the brilliant qualities of varied light and tone which he could create in aquatint. There is a sparkle of light in such works which is unique in early landscape printmaking.
This is only about the third impression of this print that we have seen in more than 30 years.
