William Scott is now widely recognised as one of the most gifted and influential painters in the mid-twentieth century modern movement. Above all his work revealed how the traditional concept of the 'still-life' could be a vehicle for the expression of a totally abstract conception of form, space and plane.

In the 1930's he was in Cornwall, and worked alongside the St. Ives painters like Nicholson. In the late 30's he was working in France both at Pont Aven and in St. Tropez, and after a further period in St. Ives he went to America, meeting Pollock, Kline and Rothko. Throughout his interest lay in the theme of still-life, with influences from Cézanne through to the bold sweeps of colour in Rothko. All these he brought together into works which investigate relationships of form and plane, and our awareness of the 'spatial sculpture' which the arrangements create.

Scott's work used a language of simple forms, cups, saucers, jugs, pots and pans. At first these were depicted in detail, subsequently becoming more summary in form and then for a period giving way to almost totally abstract works. Then in the later years he returned to the use of a much more representational treatment but with a stylised and simplified handling of both objects and setting. The work above is typical of this last great period of his art.

Scott had a profound interest in printmaking as a medium from the 1940's onwards.
