A very fine example of Arp's plaque-form metal multiple sculptures of the 1960's.
Arp was interested in sculpture above all other media, and the sensuous highly polished surfaces of his metal and wood sculptures are a total expression of his aesthetic ideas. He was, however, constantly seeking ways of extending the media through which he could communicate. Just as in his two-dimensional work he moved, for example, from drawing into printmaking because it added a new quality of surface and texture to the linear or 'block' expression of organic form, so also in his sculpture he began in the late years to experiment with low-relief, or plaque-form, works in polished metal. In these works he wanted to combine the linearity of drawing, with the polished surface of his sculpture and the block-like definition of form which he had found in his prints, especially the woodcut prints. Virtually all these low-relief, or plaque-form, sculptures date from the 1960's. The work above was created for the Dokumenta 111 exhibition in Cassel, Germany, in 1964. The contrast of the two types of metal surface, the polished brass and the aluminium, adds a further quality of spatial and emotional interplay to the work.
