Femme Nue - Composition.

Original screenprint in colours. 1959/60. Signed with the studio stamp. Dated 1960 in ink. Inscribed in ball-point with the title 'Nue' E.A.(Epreuve d'Artiste - Artist's Proof) and numbered 11/12. One of 12 proofs apart the edition of 100. With the authentication stamp of the Atelier on the reverse. Printed at Arcay Studio, Paris 1960.

Note: The image and stencils for this work were drawn and completed by Herbin shortly before he died. The edition was printed following his death.

Excellent impression with very fresh colour and without rubbing on the surface. On stiff cream wove card-type paper. Generally excellent condition; no rubbing, the very faintest trace of time toning at the extreme outer sheet edge. Full margins. Sheet: 26 1/4 x 19 5/8ins. Image: 18 7/8 x 14 7/8ins. (480x380mm).

Herbin was one of the key figures of the Abstraction-Création movement in Paris in the years just before the Second War. Following the war period he continued to develop his themes using an abstract imagery of geometric shapes based on a figurative concept. He had been allied with the Cubist circle around 1914, and then on ideas which were parallel to those of Leger. He began to make prints after the war, and the development in the 1950?s of the clear forms possible through screenprint greatly stimulate him.

?Femme Nue? or ?Nue?, above, was one of a group of 12 prints on which he was working from 1959. The series was created by the time of his death, but some of the prints had not been fully editioned or signed, as here. The editions were completed, and the studio stamp signature added under the supervision of his widow and the Atelier (see the authentication stamp on the reverse, as noted above).
