Armand Guillaumin was an important member of the Impressionist circle. Quiet and retiring by nature, he was at first a spare-time painter but subsequently gave up his position as a civil servant to devote his life to his art. He exhibited in most of the Impressionist group shows and his work, whilst not so much in the public eye, was greatly admired by his fellow painters.

This very uncommon colour lithograph is an extremely striking example of the way that Guillaumin used the special qualities of the medium - strong ink colour, juxtaposition of stroke without mixing of colour, and translucence of light - to develop the ideas in his painting, where at this date he was experimenting with a divisionist-derived range of colour and an emotional quality of light.

Guillaumin had made his first lithographs at the beginning of the 1890?s, some for the publisher Ambroise Vollard, but he continued to work in lithography for his own interest. Some of his lithographs were never issued in published editions, as in the case of that above, and examples are very rarely seen.
