A wonderfully witty ?dig? at the malpractices of Parisian shopkeepers, who Daumier felt would say anything to achieve a sale. Perhaps little has changed!

Daumier was one of the greatest draughtsman of the 19th century. He had an insight into character and an ability to observe gesture, atmosphere and human nature which has seldom been matched. With just sufficient exaggeration to make his point more visually powerful he also used realism to bitter effect.

Daumier was an inspired lithographer, with an inborn feeling of how to use variations in line and chalk density to aid his imagery. This early ?sur blanc? impression (collectors proof on white paper before the text published edition) shows this brilliance of light and shade to marvellous effect. (This lithograph was subsequently reissued for the newspaper Charivari in 1842).
