Calder contributed one of the most widely admired creative concepts to the art of the 20th century - the mobile. Through his mobiles he was seeking to create a type of spatial sculpture in which planes, surfaces and depth are evoked through organic-form disks. Balanced so as to be in constant movement these space structures have a universal fascination and an appeal to the inner senses. His purpose in drawing, painting and work in printmaking was to express these same ideas in two dimensional terms, through combinations of colour, shape patterns and line. |
