This composition is one of Hilton's earliest works in lithography. It was drawn in 1953 at a period when Hilton was travelling in Europe with his friend the Cobra painter Benjamin Constant. They met up with a number of other avant-garde young painters in Paris and decided to each draw a colour lithograph which they would sell in a portfolio 'Douze Lithographies - Twelve Lithographs' from the sales of which they would all benefit equally. Amongst the other painters would made prints with them were Poliakoff (see WWG catalogue no. 6 2000) and Dumitresco. The lithographs from this group, including the Hilton, are very rarely seen.

Hilton was one of the most creative and influential British painters from the abstract movement in the middle years of the century. His earliest works were landscape and when he moved into an abstract imagery the combinations of form are often suggestive of landscape. His most highly regarded works are those from the 1950's and early 1060's in which this type of nature-derived abstraction is at its most emotive. It was under the influence of his period in France in 1952/53 that he reduced his colour range to his characteristic browns, greys and beige, and this lithograph marks the very beginning of that period in his art.
