This famous composition was drawn by Dali in 1964 as a part of the ?Spanish Series?. At this point he was experimenting with brush drawings, the very free strokes in linked but contrasting colour tones (here dark brown and red-brown) creating the shapes and forms in a flickering pattern of constant movement.

For the prints in this style Dali worked with his friend the brilliant printer J.J.Rigal in Paris. Dali worked first in colour inks drawn with a brush on paper. These drawings were then transferred onto copper plates, bitten in two tones of aquatint and retouched and worked up by Dali. The finalised plates brilliantly echoed the tones and the ?life? in the brush strokes of the preparatory drawings.

In the 1960?s Dali was still controlling his prints, and the editions very closely. It also predates the period when here began to be problems with false signatures. ?Toledo?, above, was purchased by the previous owner at the time the etching was made, and it remained in his collection until very recently.
