This beautiful small abstract composition in lithography by De Stael only exists in an edition of 15 impressions. It was inspired by the writing of Rene Char, and this impression came from his collection. No impressions from the small edition were ever offered for public sale, all being given by De Stael and Char to friends.

De Stael was one of the single most important artists in the establishment of the ?colour abstract? movement in France and the USA in the 1940?s and 50?s. De Stael sought to create an imagery which appealed to the emotions on a subconscious level through lyrical form and linking of colour in a similar manner to the appeal of abstract poetry. There are very often strong links in his work between the written word and the drawn or painted image, and it was this that led to his great admiration for, and friendship with, the poet Rene Char.

Almost all of De Stael?s work in colour lithography is extremely rare.
