La Fresnaye was one of the most creative and innovative of the painters in the second period of Cubism - that is from 1912. That his work still remains little known except to connoisseurs of the period is due to the fact that he fought in the First War almost from its beginning in 1914, was badly gassed in 1918, and from that time on had very poor health only painting rarely until his tragically early death in 1925. Drawing was central to his creative process and there is a strong graphic element even in his paintings.

The earliest prints in La Fresnaye?s work are a few woodcuts around 1908-10. However it was really in lithography - and in his three main prints in particular - that his creative use of printmaking is seen at its finest. The three most important lithographs are Nature Morte à la Bouteille and Le Rameur of 1913, and L?Homme au Palfrey (above) drawn in 1921.

La Fresnaye had first studied at the Académie Julian in 1906 but it was really Cézanne and the first works of Cubism by Picasso and Braque which were the decisive influences on him. By 1910 there was a strong Cubist element in his own work, strengthened by his friendship with Robert Delaunay. Whilst it was the ideas of Cubism which controlled his approach to form the subtlety of his art lay in his sensitivity to tone. It is this quality of tone linked to form which makes his work in lithography so impressive.

Impressions of L?Homme au Palfrey are extremely rare.
