Wooded Landscape with Herdsman and Cows.

Original aquatint with softground etching in brown/black ink. c.1780. An extremely early impression from the small edition issued by Boydell, 1797, with the inscription: 'Designed and Engraved by Thos. Gainsborough' and plate no '10'. Only two or three impressions are recorded prior to
the Boydell issue. Very rare.

Superb early impression with rich tonal contrasts. On pale cream wove paper. Excellent original unrestored condition. Trace of old mounting glue and old tape on reverse upper corners & edge. Trimmed to show 1/4-1/8in beyond borderline. Sheet: 267x334mm. Image: 258x325mm. 10 1/8 x 12 3/4ins.
