The warm glowing tones of the beige, ochre and blue-grey colours in this study give it a particularly appealing atmosphere.
In many ways the soaring bird has come to be seen as the great symbolic motif of the later period of Braque's art. The line of their flight defines space and the rhythmic elegance of the curving lines of their form evokes both freedom and movement. In the 1950's Braque wrote that they were not so much a symbol as a means of self-expression, a means of expressing his belief in the limitless space of life and the eternity of creation.
Oiseau des Sables combines all these ideas with an atmosphere of the warmth and light of the South of France from which Braque, like so many of his contemporaries, had derived such renewed inspiration in the years after the Second War. |
