Prunella Clough has been one of the most consistently inventive and inspired British painter-printmakers since the 1950?s. This unique monoprint, using a mixture of techniques and hand-overworking in chalk, is absolutely typical of her creative approach to themes which link imagery derived from landscape with a lyrical abstract handling of form, colour and texture.
Clough first studied at Chelsea School of Art and began to exhibit just after the War. Her earliest links were with the traditions of the English Neo-Romantic painters but she also felt a strong influence from the developing ideas of abstract art in France. In her very earliest industrial scenes she concentrated on figure studies handled in a semi-abstract manner which was close to the work of Keith Vaughan in concept. However, she quickly moved towards landscape-derived images, using an increasingly abstract handling. Throughout, however it is the almost poetic quality of her sensitivity to combination of colour, texture and shape which are the most striking aspect of her work. In recent years she has had many exhibitions in Britain and overseas, including an important retrospective at the Whitechapel Gallery. |
