Danseuse Mettant son Chausson. Dancer tying her Shoe. by Edgar Degas, 1834-1917
Danseuse Mettant son Chausson. Dancer tying her Shoe.

Original etching in black ink. c.1888. From the first edition of 150 impressions printed from the cancelled plate 1910/15 for Ambroise Vollard. (Vollard had bought the plate direct from Degas; the plate is now in a private collection and no further impressions will be printed). Only c.6 impressions are known prior to the cancellation. Probably etched by Degas for Mallarmé's album: Le Tiroir de Lacque, c.1888.

Ref: Delteil - Degas no.36. Reed-Shapiro - Degas The Painter as Printmaker no 55 iii, with the cancellation.

Fine tonal impression of the Vollard issue. On medium stiff slightly textured cream wove paper. Excellent condition. Sheet 12 7/8 x 9 7/8 ins. Plate 7 x 4 1/2 ins (177x115mm).

The manner in which Degas has captured a tiny moment in the movement of the dancer tying her shoe emphasises his desire to express the realism of ballet (and of life) rather than its romance.
