Excellent strong and tonal impression of the first issued edition. On pale cream soft wove paper. Generally excellent condition; the very slightest suggestion of time toning in
the margins. Sheet: 9 1/8 x 13 1/8ins. Plate: 7 7/8 x 11ins ( 200x278mm)

John Sell Cotman was one of the greatest draughtsmen of the Norwich School, that group of British artists based in Norwich in East Anglia at the beginning of the 19th century who were really instrumental in introducing the concept of true natural landscape studied in the ?open-air? into British landscape painting. He was also a superlative printmaker, especially in etching and softground etching, with a wonderful understanding of the role of tone in line.
