L'Ordre des Oiseaux. The Order of the Birds.

Original etching with relief-printing in colours. 1961/62. Signed in pencil. Numbered (71) in pencil from the edition of 75. Etched to accompany the album: 'L'Ordre des Oiseaux de St.Jean Perse'. Printed at the studio of Crommelynck, Paris 1962. (There was a subsequent edition of c.250 unsigned and with added lettering used as a poster for the first exhibition of the album). The signed pre-letter proofs of this etching, as here, only rarely appear on the market.

Excellent impression with rich colours. On pale cream wove Arches-type paper. Excellent condition. Wide margins. Sheet: 16 5/8 x 20 7/8ins (425x529mm). Plate: 11 5/8 x 14 1/2ins. (295x370mm).

A very effective example of the way in which Braque exploited the combination of deep-bitten texture and ink colour in his late etchings.
