One of the most beautiful expressions of Braque's theme of 'soaring birds' from the late period of his life. The combination of the pen-drawn line, which forms a constantly moving pattern of inter linked shapes, and the glowing yellow and pale blue colours, give this work a special sense of lyrical light and atmosphere.
This lithograph was drawn as part of a series of images inspired by the poetry of René Char. Braque began work on the lithographs in the series in 1958 and continued for four years. They were one of the last great graphic projects of his long oeuvre and Mourlot has written about the enthusiasm and renewed vigour with which he worked on them. This sense of new inspiration is very apparent in compositions like 'Migration'. |
