Palmer's interest in etching was spread over the years from 1850 to 1880. His first etchings were in the small format of Christmas, above. By the beginning of the 1860's he had turned to a landscape format, and to themes in which there is an even stronger Virgilian quality in the vision of the countryside and the pastoral life. The Early Ploughman is one of two compositions on the theme of 'The Life of the Ploughman' as an embodiment of the untouched rural existence. It is one of Palmer's great compositions in etching.
