Original mezzotint with etching in black ink. 1830. With the lettering but without (before?) the page number. Lettered:' Designed and Engraved by John Martin. The Flood.' A single print first issued for Richard Martin's 'The Last Days of the Antediluvian World', 1830. Subsequently reissued for Thomas Hawkins 'The Wars of Jehovah, 1844'. This impression for the first issue.

Excellent rich impression, with particularly crisp inking on the lettering, suggesting an early impression. On pale cream light wove paper, as first issued. Print surface excellent, lower right margin corner with traces of an old crease (outside image) and time and ink staining. c.1/8 ins margins. Sheet: 6 1/8 x 9ins. Image:3 7/8 x 6 3/4ins.

Martin's composition of The Flood is a very striking version of how effective he could make his visions of natural calamity even on a small scale. It achieves an extraordinary intensity of light and atmosphere within an almost miniature format.
