The extraordinary tonal range which Constable and Lucas achieved in the English Landscape Scenery mezzotints is brilliantly expressed in this study of rough sea off the beach at Brighton. It is a proof before the reworking on the head of the fisherman mending his nets, and before other retouching to the plate.
