Original etching in black ink. c.1825. From the only edition issued by Charles Muskett, Norwich 1848, as a part of the series: Eight Original Etchings. No impressions
dating from c.1825 are known.

Extremely fine richly inked impression. On off-white laid india (chine appliqué) with a stiff white wove backing sheet, as issued. Excellent condition. Full margins. Sheet: 13 1/2 x 19 3/4ins. Plate: 8 x 11 1/8ins. (204x284mm)

This study, one of Cotman's most fully worked and developed compositions in etching, was probably drawn either whilst on a sketching trip to northern France in 1821 or shortly afterwards using a drawing from that trip as a source. No impressions were issued, or possibly even printed, at the time it was etched. The issue above was the first.
