Original softground etching in black ink. c.1815/20. From the first issued edition in the large paper edition of 'Liber studiorum, a Series of Sketches and Studies by John Sell Cotman', published by H. Bohn 1838. No impressions from 1815/20 are known.

Very fine strong impression. On pale cream stiff wove paper. Generally excellent original condition. Full margins. Sheet: 18 1/8 x 13 1/8ins. Plate: 9 3/8 x 6 3/8ins (238x162mm)

Cotman made some of his most beautiful etchings working in softground, probably inspired by Crome's work in the medium. The softgrounds cannot be dated with accuracy but are generally considered to have been drawn around 1815. (See also The Old Collecge House, Conway, Wales)
