Original softground etching with roulette work and mixed methods in black ink. 1788. Engraved and printed by George Stubbs on his own press, and published by him in 1788. This impression trimmed so as to show the full image and a thread margin, but inside the platemark and thus lacking
the publication line so the state cannot be identified. Extremely rare.
Ref: Lennox-Boyd,Dixon & Clayton-Stubbs Engraved Works no 71
Strong impression with very little plate wear, the ink surface a little 'murky' as the sheet previously had a 'glaze' added to the surface which has now been removed. On heavy wove 18th century paper. One trace of a minor printing crease upper left, otherwise sheet surface excellent. Sheet: 9 7/8 x 13 1/4ins. (252x338mm).
