One of the most beautiful still-life compositions in Braque?s graphic oeuvre in a superb impression with resplendent glowing colours.

Still-life compositions of fruit were a favourite theme for Braque throughout his life. He would return to such images whenever he felt he needed to clarify his mind. He always insisted that there was a bowl of fresh fruit in his studio, partly for eating and partly as a source of mental and visual stimulation through the patterns and rhythms of the shapes and colours.

Braque was an inspired lithographer, fully understanding the combination of a painterly freedom and a translucence of colour which is unique to it as a medium. In a work such as Les Citrons, above, he combined linear contour, brushwork and that special quality of texture which is derived from overprinting, together with his supreme lyricism of colour, to create an imagery which is both timeless and at the same moment fully expressive of his personal message of spiritual freedom and creativity.
