A superb impression of one of Tissot's most beautiful etchings from the last Paris period of his work.
Tissot was deeply affected by the death of Kathleen Newton in November 1882. Her funeral was on November 15th, and by midnight that day he was in Paris calling on his friend the writer De Goncourt telling him of his sadness. Although he felt that he could not remain in London he was determined that in Paris he should re-establish his reputation as a painter of elegant figures in society settings. He wanted to display his genius for textures and surfaces, working in oil, in pastel which was also being used by his impressionist friends Manet and Degas, and in etching.
'Le Dimanche Matin - Sunday Morning' is one of the first and finest of his etchings of this period, relying for its effect on his inspiration in the description of the fur and silk of the dress. The composition of 'Sunday Morning' is in many ways a development of that in 'A Winter Walk' (no 10 in this catalogue) but a comparison of the two shows how Tissot was intent on creating a decorative rather than emotional impact at this date. The feel of the textures of the clothing and of the icy Sunday air is brilliantly captured. The model for 'Dimanche Matin' was Berthe , seen in no 15 in this catalogue, but her full identity is not known. |
