'The Lover's Quarrel' is one of the most renowned of Tissot's London etchings. Its composition underlines the inspired way in which Tissot used compositional arrangement to emphasise the themes of his pictures. The column physically divides the couple, who despite their proximity, do not touch each other. She clasps the column rather than the man; it hides his face from her, and from us as the audience, and at the same time she looks down petulantly.

This composition, which is related to a now-lost painting of the same theme, is also an absolutely brilliant example of Tissot's genius in displaying textures and surfaces in his etching. The contrast of the fur trim with the silk of her dress is almost tangible.
