Sonia Delaunay made some of her most impressive and effective print images in the medium of stencilprint or pochoir. The extreme brilliance of colour, mat surface and slightly textured forms which the cut stencils allowed gives these prints a particularly powerful visual impact, expressing to the maximum the concepts of 'space sculpture' which she and her husband Robert Delaunay had first explored in their 'Orphist' or 'Simultaneous' compositions in the 1910's. One of the finest groups of stencil prints that she made were for the series entitled 'Rhythmes et Couleurs' issued in 1966 in a very small edition.

The Delaunay's 'Orphist' or 'Simultaneous' ideas were investigations of how juxtaposed brilliant colour tones establish differing visual planes, with apparent progression or recession from the picture surface, through the light absorption or reflection of each colour. By simultaneous juxtaposition of colours of opposing tendencies a type of visual movement and 'spatial form' is created. It was these ideas that Sonia Delaunay continued to develop throughout her life, in paintings, even in fabric designs, and then extremely effectively through her consuming interest in printmaking in the years after the War.
