A beautiful impression of one of Giacometti?s most characteristic etchings. Studies of ?Sculptures in the Studio? were a theme to which Giacometti returned on many occasions for paintings, drawing and prints. He found he was constantly fascinated both by the arrangement of the forms themselves and by the intellectual idea of recreating forms and objects which were already his own creation.

The most powerful quality in Giacometti?s work, whether in sculpture or in painting or drawing, is the sense of confrontation and very direct communication between the figure and the viewer. He wrote often about his desire to pare objects down to their essential essence. It was his search to cutaway everything around a form which was not crucial that was one of the prime reasons why he found such satisfaction in etching as a medium. The line drawn with the etching needle onto the copperplate and bitten by the acid was by its very nature incisive. He found in it a unique combination of precision and incision, whilst at the same time allowing total freedom of drawing. It is this quality of very fine powerful cutting line, which sparkles against the surface of the paper, that gives his etchings their unique visual strength. It is also a quality seen at its finest in this study of Sculptures dans l?Atelier.
