A superb impression of a very important work from the 1940?s.
?Little Girl Skipping? is one of the most important etchings drawn by Mirķ during his period in New York during the War. Like many of his surrealist friends who had fled to the USA to escape the war in Europe Mirķ?s interest in etching was further stimulated when Hayter re-established his Paris etching studio in New York. Under Hayter?s tutelage Mirķ began to experiment further with random ways of biting the plate so as to create the type of hallucinatory illogical dream imagery that he wanted.
?Little Girl Skipping? is a superlative example of the way that Mirķ used new techniques to evoke the ideas of the subconscious. Shapes, textures, random strokes, surface work on the plate created by an uncontrolled use of the etching acid, all are combined with the typical characters of his drawing at this period - suggested figures, birds, animals. |
