A fine example of one of the rare relief wall ?sculpture multiples? which Vasarely made in wood.

In the mid 1960?s Vasarely started to experiment with creating multiple three-dimensional relief ?wall plaques? using patterns of geometric forms, such as he had used in his paintings. The shapes were cut from wood blocks, mounted on a support board and sprayed with the mat colours. The relief of each section of the block against its neighbour causes shadows to play over the surface so that the light becomes part of the sculptural effect.

These relief plaques mark a culmination of Vasarely?s use of geometric forms in painting and screenprints in the 1960?s, taking the concept of optical composition into a whole new area, and they have become seminal objects in the history of that aspect of 20th century abstract art. Few of these multiple relief plaques have survived in fine condition.
