This portrait, in a very fine impression, of the famous Parisian music hall star Jeanne Granier shows Toulouse-Lautrec?s drawing at its incomparable best. Every nuance and curl of line is used, with the texture and transparency of the ink tone, to express the style and the character of her personality and her performance. Lautrec had a way of using line to create atmosphere which remains one of the greatest achievements in the art of the late 19th century, and in the whole history of printmaking.
This lithograph was one of a group of studies of leading performers, actors and actresses commissioned from Lautrec in 1898. |
