This small format composition illustrates very clearly the manner in which in his lithographs Poliakoff used textured colour surfaces within angular interlocked forms to create an effect of visual sculpture, the forms appearing to project and recede. Poliakoff had a particular sensitivity to colour combinations, and the linked but contrasting tones of brilliant blue and green in this work achieve a marvellous quality of lyrical harmony. Poliakoff had trained as a musician as a young man and there is a quality of ?musicality? about the manner in which he handles both form and colour.

Poliakoff began to paint in the 1920?s and the Delaunays were an important formative influence on his work. By the 1940?s his work had developed the totally abstract qualities shown in ?Bleu-Vert? above. He wanted to put aside any links with a figurative visual imagery and use the combinations of form and colour alone to stimulate an emotional reaction in the viewer. By the immediate post-war period he was recognised as one of the foremast European painters of the abstract movement.
