Orovida was the granddaughter of the Impressionist Camille Pissarro. Whilst she inherited from him an inspiration in the use of etching as am medium which is totally individual, and highly creative, her themes are very much her own. She worked almost entirely on themes of animals, but not the everyday animals of the real world, rather animals given a new and imaginary quality.
Just Cats is a brilliant example of her very personal style. The handling of the technique is powerful and creative, but most remarkable of all is the way that they are instilled with compelling, almost dreamlike, force and atmosphere.
Orovida Piassaro etched some 50 compositions, largely working in England. All were only printed in small editions on her own press, with rich hand inking. |
