This lithograph is one of the major works from the early period of Marini?s interest in colour lithography as a medium at the beginning of the 1950?s. The form is very powerfully expressed, with the bold contrast of the red figure against the black of the horse. Perhaps most striking of all is the richness of the textures. It was this ability to work the ink on the surface of the stone with brush, pen or finger, creating swirling variations of tone, which was one of the features which most attracted Marini to working in lithography. He felt that it allowed him to give a totally different feeling to his ?Horse and Rider? themes from anything that was possible in painting or drawing.
The motif of ?Horse and Rider? is the central image of his art. He used it in an infinite variety of forms to explore the relationship between man and nature, sometimes in harmony sometimes in conflict. |
