Kollwitz created some of the most powerful and disturbing images of German art in the period up to the First War through her studies of the social degradation of the poor. Identifying herself closely with the message of her art, and reminded constantly of the situation of the underprivileged of the period through her work with her doctor husband in the poorest parts of Berlin, she used the theme of the Self Portrait as a symbol of her message.

Her art was often at its most powerful in the medium of woodcut, where she used the contrasts of black and white and the deliberate simplification of form to emphasise the visual message. This woodcut Self Portrait illustrates the constantly disturbing impact of her imagery.
