Delaunay established her ideas about the use of arrangements of colour shapes to create an abstract form of visual ?space-sculpture? in the 1920?s, together with her husband Robert Delaunay. However it was in the period just after the Second War hat she began to concentrate on print media for the expression of these ideas. She was particularly enthusiastic about the way that lithographic ink combines intensity of colour, a flat untextured surface, and at the same time a quality of translucence. This could not be achieved in any paint form, and experimenting with lithography gave new inspiration to her art, resulting, during the 1960?s in a particular, in some of her most vibrant compositions.
