In this study of his sister?s children Bonnard shows all that quality of intimate emotion which had been at the centre of his art since his first works in the 1880?s and 90?s. It was drawn in 1924 as part of a small group of works which marked Bonnard?s revival of interest in the medium at that period, all issued by the enlightened Paris publisher Edmond Frapier. In its beautiful handling of contrasts of light and shade, using the rich density of the chalk to emphasise the highlights, it shows how Bonnard?s feeling for the medium of lithography was enriched by the passage of time.
