During the mid 1960?s Miro?s work in lithography reached a peak of creativity. Influenced both by contact with oriental art, and the forms of Japanese and Chinese calligraphy, which he found particularly beautiful and expressive, and also by the increasing emphasis on gesture in the actual act of painting as was being actively advocated by the American Abstract-Expressionist artists such as De Kooning and Jackson Pollock, and by their European followers, Miro introduced a much greater freedom of stroke into his own style. Sweeping free brush-drawn forms, usually in liquid black washes, were combined with random but very lyrical splashes of strong colour.

Miro found that this new style was particularly suited to working in lithography, the actual nature of the medium allowing him to create special effects. Thus the blacks could vary from extreme density to translucence; at the same time colour could either be worked with a brush, or with chalk , and above all by spattering. The result was a series of compositions in lithography, drawn at Mourlot?s studio, which reached new heights of inspiration. Danse Barbare, above, is an exciting example of his best work of this period, sparkling with colour and vibrantly alive in the brushstrokes.
