Viera da Silva?s prints are characterised by their quality of linearity and texture. Patterns of line and tone, sometimes in pure drypoint or in a brush-drawn strongly textural aquatint as here, create effects of space and structure which are extremely poetic and beautiful. Landscape was the prime source of her inspiration but refined so that the forms have a quite independent existence.
Viera da Silva was born in Portugal but studied art in Paris in the 1920?s when she worked with Leger and Dufresne. By the 1930?s she was already attracting critical acclaim for the unique combination of poetry, mystery and structure in her images both in painting and in prints, qualities which are typified in this aquatint. |
