An extremely rare working proof for the 'Cooking' series of lithographs which Vuillard drew in 1935. This proof is a first version of the subject, before an additional figure was added on the right. It is inscribed in pencil by Vuillard.
Throughout his life one of the greatest qualities of Vuillard's art was his ability to use intimate moments of everyday domestic life as a source for images which have a universal and enduring quality of emotion. He first used such themes in the 1890's, but they were to remain central to his art throughout his life. Some of the most beautiful expressions of these ideas are in his drawing and in his printmaking.
The set of six lithographs in the 'Cuisine' series illustrate the enduring freshness of his inspiration in using the tonal values of lithography to enhance the atmosphere of his 'intime' subjects. |
