During the 1920's Rouault concentrated on the medium of lithography in his prints. He found that the freedom of stroke and the inherent luminosity inherent in the interplay between ink and paper allowed him to create a an emotional intensity of light which was the perfect vehicle for the unique passion of his imagery.
Apart from individual prints he devoted much of his attention to sets of lithographs in which the sequence of the compositions allowed him to give a broader range to his theme. Rouault was always a prolific writer himself, and some of his finest works illustrate themes in his writing. The series 'Paysages Legendaires - Legendary Landscapes' was drawn by him in 1929 to accompany a number of his own poems, in which he links his moral and religious ideas to social comment.
This complete series of lithographs under the title 'Paysages Legendaires' includes not only the six compositions, each signed with initials in the stone, but also the full set of Rouault's text. |
