Four pre-issue proofs for 'La Bague d'Aurore' - 'The Dawn Jewel' - one of Miro's most highly prized groups of small-scale colour etchings drawn in the 1950's, shortly after his return to Paris after the War.
It was the use of colour in etching which was the particular focus of Miro's attention in printmaking when he returned to Paris at the end of the 1940's. In the 1950's he was concentrating on ways of using mixtures of biting, with varying textures of etching and aquatint, and separate colour inkings to create images of line, form and colour which would really exploit the unique visual qualities of the print medium. It was in the compositions such as the 'Bague d'Aurore' series, inspired by a poetic text by his friend René Crevel, that Miro reached a peak of expression in this style.
In these small-scale prints there is freshness of imagery and a glowing jewel-like sparkle of colour and texture, which shows Miro's work at a peak of inspiration.
All the proofs detailed above come from the archives of the estate of Louis Broder, the publisher who issued the Bague d'Aurore series for Miro in 1957. |
