L?Innocente - El Innocente is an arresting example of the jewel-like intensity of colour and fascinating vitality of line and surface texture which Miro instilled into some of his best small-scale etchings in the 1970?s. The colours, brilliant red, blue and yellow, are woven into the pattern of textured lines so that half-suggested forms seem to float in and out of recognition as your eye passes over the image.
Miro?s use of varied technique in etching advanced greatly in the 1970?s under the tutelage of the great etching printers of the period such as Visat, Lacouriere-Frelaut and Morsang, as here. In particular an increasing use of gravure line, rough-worked to enhance its textural qualities, gives the surface of such compositions as this a rich and constant sense of movement.
?The Innocent? is an exceptionally striking illustration of the constant invention of Miro?s printmaking even in the later periods of his life. |
