'The Bureaucrat' is one of the outstanding prints of the middle period of Dali's graphic oeuvre, and one which very seldom appears on the market. The style of the drawing and the treatment of the imagery links to his work in the 1950's. Indeed the fine line and tight handling of form are very similar to works which appear as early as the 'Chants de Maldoror' of the 1930's. On stylistic grounds this may well have been a plate begun much earlier than 1969, and only completed when Dali worked on it at Visat's studio in 1969.
The composition of 'The Bureaucrat' has all the sense of incisive humour, tight controlled line and provocative juxtapositions of objects which mark out Dali's finest works at all periods of his life. Above all it has that creation of imagery which while nonsensical if analysed as separate elements seems somehow to make total sense at a subliminal non-rational level. It is this that sums-up the real crux of Dali's Surrealism. |
