During the 1950?s Miro became increasingly fascinated by colour lithography as a medium and by the infinite range of visual effects that he could create as he became more and more familiar with working on the stones at the studios of Mourlot and of Adrien Maeght. At the end of the 1950?s he began to experiment with compositions combining brush strokes in a bold very dense black ink linked to areas of vibrant colour.
?Altamira?, above, is the most powerful of this group of compositions from the late 1950?s. The shape of the central form links to the imagery of aquatic half-recognisable creatures with which Miro had experimented just before the War.
A version of the Altamira composition was also used on the cover of the catalogue for the exhibition at Galerie Maeght ?Sur 4 Murs? which featured Miro?s work in mid 1958.
Miro?s colour lithographs from the period of the 1950?s are now rarely found on the market. |
