This rare early etching by Dali is an exceptionally fine example of the ?inspirational? frenetic style of drawing which became prominent in Dali?s draughtsmanship in the years just after the War. He had made his first etchings at the beginning of the 1930?s (see no opposite); interrupted by the War years he began to work widely in graphic media again during the mid 1950?s and it was at the beginning of the 1960?s that he was to make some of his most creative prints of this second period.

Dali was fascinated by the idea that drawing, or etching, could be the result of an almost explosive surge of subconscious emotion, and it was this which he tried to express in works like The Deposition above. The theme chosen was deliberately the most traditional and revered of Western art; by treating it in a manner which is almost hallucinatory he sought to shock the viewer into emotional communication at an intuitive rather than rational level.

This impression is from the rare original edition drawn and printed in 1960 at the Lacourière-Frélaut in Paris (the previous owner purchased it in the 1960?s). In 1985 there was a reprinted edition which may be from a reproduced plate rather than the original.
